Chaos Cup 2016, Somebody Guess Something

Chaos Cup 2016 is coming up fast!  I'm going to continue with a tradition that began last year.

I'm going to make Racial, picks for this years awards:

-  1st:  Dwarves
-  2nd:  Undead
-  3rd:  Norse
-  Best D: Chaos Dwarf
-  Best O:  Skaven
-  Brutal:  Pact
-  I Am Chaos:  Chaos
-  Stunty Cup:  Halflings
-  Wooden Spoon:  Human

Here are my guesses from 2015 and the results.

-  1st:  Dark Elves (Norse)
-  2nd:  Amazons (Dwarf)
-  3rd:  Chaos Dwarfs (Amazon)
-  Best D:  Undead (Chaos Dwarf)
-  Best O:  Skaven (Skaven) +1
-  Brutal:  Dwarfs (Human and Halflings)
-  I Am Chaos:  Pact (Chaos)
-  Stunty Cup:  Halflings (Halfling) +1
-  Wooden Spoon:  Ogres (High Elf)

2/9 better than I thought I'd do!

I had a contest set-up for this last year and no one took me up on it; so this year... nothing... Unless someone actually responds... then I'll give 'em something...

Chaos Cup All-time Stats, 2016 part 6

This Labor Day weekend, only one team can reign supreme.  One team will take taste the glory.  One coach will hoist the prestigious Chaos Cup.  Will it be you?  The Blood Bowl world turns their sights on Chicagoland and the 2016 Chaos Cup.  Will Europe take home another US Major victory?  Will a US coach bring the win back to native shores?  Or will a Canadian take the title north of the border? Chaoscup.com has all the information on the tournament.

We’re using the results tab from the NAF website.

In 2014 the torch was passed to Katie Muzik to be the leader of the Chaos Cup Committee.  2015 was her first full year running the event.

1.  Grither - Bryan Tew, Champion in 2014, 24 wins, 4 losses, 7 ties
2.  Delevus - Matt Vanderby, Champion in 2010, 21 wins, 6 losses, 8 ties

Zlurpee Bowl XII - Review

Zlurpee Bowl XII was this past weekend in Indianapolis and it was an absolute blast.  The tournament overall was won by Flyingdingle (now a two time champion) and had almost 1/3rd of the field playing For The Love Of The Game teams.  I didn't keep track of exactly how my games went but here's a quick rundown.  I played FTLOTG Skinks.

Roster:
Initech Gangsters
Kroxigor - Peter Gibbons, Break Tackle, Juggernaut
Skinks - Samir Na EE ena jahr, Diving Tackle
Michael Bolton - Side Step
Dom Portwood-Diving Tackle
Drew O'Face - Side Step
Tom Smykowski - Jump-up
Bill Lumbergh - Jump-up
Lawrence
Milton Waddams
The Bob's
Brian Flair
2 Coaches, 2 Cheerleaders, 2 Bloodweiser Babes, apothecary
No re-rolls

Game 1, Jeffro FTLOTG Cheaters, 4 - 1:
This game was totally decided by his pogo-er. He failed almost all of his pick-up attempts.  Jeffro had one team re-roll and called upon his pogo-er to use it twice so two of his failed attempts we double failed.  That guy had a real aversion to the ball.  Skink speed allowed me to get to a lot of lose balls and score three of my TD's on defense. 1-0

Game 2: HT Skaven, 0-3:
HT's Skaven could match my overall speed but had the added bonus of strength.  He beat up on my team and after scoring late in the first half I decided to take some chances to score quickly to even up the game.  It didnt work and the skaven were able two speed their way to another score.  Then I got real desperate and decided to attempt a pass... uh-uh said a line ratypus, I gonna intercept you and were gonna score.  He did.  1-1

Game 3: Madrobot Chaos Pact, 0-2?:
I really don't recall much from this game, as indicated by the fact I don't truly know how many TD's he had.  By no means does that mean it wasn't fun.  I enjoyed all the games I had at Zlurpee but this one may have been the most fun.  Madrobot is a funny guy (I know I'm not the first to say that), so, yeah getting beat was whatever.  I do remember that he has a tackle piece which kicked my butt. 1-2

Game 4:  ThreeofSwords FTLOTG Cheaters, 1-0?:
Again I don't remember the score.  I played ThreeofSwords and I think this basic roster at Chaos Cup 15.  His bomber did all kinds of damage to me that game and this time I felt a repeat coming on when I saw he was my opponent again.  The most memorable part of this game for me was one of his loonies.  One chainsaw kicked back three time and each time he rolled a 3, so nothing happened.  It was very nice to not have those chainsaws come my way.  Oh yeah and the ref turned down two out of three bribes.  I've never met a Blood Bowl ref so adverse to money. 2-2

Game 5:  Solarflare Chaos Pact, 1-1:
So having the dodge re-roll on almost all my players worked out very well.  I failed my first dodge of the game, after that, I succeeded (with the re-roll) probably 40+ times.  They kicked to me to start the game and I was able to score on my third turn.  I didn't even come close to possessing it for the rest of the game.  The dark elf decided to fail a three plus dodge on the last turn of the first half and get into the endzone on the final turn of the game. 2-2-1

Game 6, FTLOTG Finals:  Shoveler FTLOTG Hobgoblins, 1-1:
Holy Cow, Hobgoblins are so cheap he was able to buy a ton of them, three re-rolls, coaches and cheerleaders, multiple fan factor and a babe!  I was quite envious of all he had.  I received the opening kick and decided to make myself work quite hard for my score by doing a lot of failing.  Double skulling with my Krox, failing dodges and failing a sure hands pick up.  Fun, fun.  I did finally score and held him just short of the endzone and getting the tie before half time.  In the second half attrition started to take hold and he marched down for a by-the-book cage touchdown.  When he kicked back to me I had three turns to try to score.  My setup went well considering my numbers disadvantage but my second turn ended in quick failure.  Shoveler popped the ball out quite easily but made an extraordinary effort to get the ball way down the pitch.  My turn eight called for a miracle if I was going to score.  I needed to perform three 3+ dodges to get a one die hit on the ball carrier which was a defender down.  Then the ball scattered into an opening.  I needed a 3+ dodge, a 3+ pick up two more 3+ dodges and 2 go-for-its to make a long pass that required a 6.  The ball then sailed through the air with amazing accuracy.  I needed a 3+ to catch the ball and i could waltz into the enzone for the win and the FTLOTG Championship.  The die rolled out of my hand and under an open case lid.  My opponent moved the case lid and... revealed a 1.  I dropped the ball and a chance for glory.  The tie gave Shoveler the FTLOTG Title and he deserved it.

Well, this didn't turn out as quick as I thought...

Anyway, a huge thanks goes out to Xtreme and any-and-all of his helpers!  What a great time!

Dog Bowl IV Primer and History

The KUBBL presents the fourth version of the Dog Bowl on March 19th at the Marmalade Dog convention in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The tournament has grown over the years to be the showcase for the "Underdog" races of Blood Bowl.  The last two editions have been won by the mutated powers of the Frozen Flames, a powerful chaos pact team coached by the host of the Siggy Llama Show.

The Dog Bowl was born out the remnants of the Special "K" Cup.  A twice held tournament where the coaches of the KUBBL were playing with ideas to create a tournament series with its own flavor. Those tournaments along with the first Dog Bowl all had different rule sets but they still saw the same races winning.  A significant change was made beginning with Dog Bowl II.  The tournament organizer felt that the tournament needed to set itself apart from other Blood Bowl events and the best way to try and do that was to "stack the deck" in the favor of those... less talented teams.

Here is an updated look back on the past tournaments to get some statics and records for Kalamazoo Ultimate Blood Bowl League tournaments.

A Very Moosey Jingle-Bowl Recap

Awesome job guys!  A big thank you goes out to Fejwe and the guys from the MCBBL on picking up the 2015 version of the Jingle Bowl.  The event this year saw 12 players vie for the Jingle Bowl title.  This year’s winner, Delevus and his Untold Horrors, fought their way to not only the Jingle Bowl title but the Great Lakes Tournament Series Championship as well.

As stated in the preview this tournament is a fund raiser for the Mooseheart Foundation.  The twelve coach that took part in the tournament as well as some MCBBL folks, were able to raise $360 for charity!  A good time and a good cause.

Just because the tournament is over doesn’t mean you can’t be charitable to the Mooseheart Foundation or any other charities you feel could use your help.

A Very Moosey Jingle-Bowl December 12

A Very Moosey Jingle-Bowl

A little background - Jingle-Bowl is a Christmas themed Blood Bowl charity tournament held in southeast Michigan.  The tourney boast high team values and special Jingle Stars take the pitch to assist the Blood Bowl races in their en devours to rule the pitch.  It was run in the past by Fevin and her group of assistants but she wasn't able to do it this year.  This 4th Edition of the tournament is being taken over by the guys of the Motor City Blood Bowl League. Thanks for stepping up fellas!

The Mooseheart Foundation and the Higher Education Fund for Levi Wells will be the charities receiving the proceeds of this year's tournament.  The Blood Bowl tournament community is extremely generous.  I personally became involved with this game in 2010 and have played in a few tournaments over these past five years.  I would have never thought (before I met them) that the people who play this board game for fun would be so incredibly generous as a group.  I am blown away at the amount of giving I've seen from this community over the years.  How incredible that we can get together and play a game that we enjoy and at the same time help with charitable giving.

Check out the link for The Mooseheart Child City and School and consider helping them out even if you cannot attend.  Levi Wells is the son of the former MCBBL commissioner who passed away unexpectedly.

See you this Saturday!

What's Goin' On?

I am relatively new to this gaming thing and don't have a ton of background knowledge on it.  Basically if it weren't for Blood Bowl I'd know nothing about gaming in any facet and I wouldn't have had the chance to meet so many awesome people.  I really enjoy some of the games that may end up affected by this week's news.

The internet has been a buzz with some information/rumors that may effect change in the gaming world.  It's been said that a lost segment of gaming is firing back up.  A few years ago a table top gaming giant closed down all their non-main gaming systems; most had been ignored for years but this ended it .  They quit making new models, new games, and changing rule systems.  Basically these games went dark.  If not for gaming communities that work to keep these games going, we'd have lost some good gaming.  Blood Bowl was one of those orphaned games kept alive and thriving by a wonderful community.

The basis of this blog is Blood Bowl so I'll keep my thoughts to that.  If this event comes to pass (it's looking more and more likely) it still raises a multitude of questions.  At its best, this may mean we'll get new models, new star players, new art and fluff for an official release of an LRB 6 rulebook.  At its most frightening to existing players it means a totally revamped game; new rules, new scale, etc.

This is our biggest fear, the only tunes that we hear, come via antenna though your car radio.  Oops broke off into some Trio lyrics there.  Sorry back to it.  This is my biggest fear: a wonderful and caring community has worked to keep it alive.  DON'T PUSH THEM OUT!  It would be great to get some new models and maybe an art and fluff filled rulebook.  Other companies have stepped in and filled the gap in support by making incredible minis, pitches, and accessories for this game, all of which need to stay viable through any changes that get made.  Also many people have put time into play testing and working out rules clarifications, statistical analysis and playbooks for the races.  I would like for all their work to stay relevant.

Obviously more than just Blood Bowl will be affected by this potential change.  Not all attention is good attention, let's hope for the best... a no Sigmarine Blood Bowl teams.

Chaos Cup Rundown 2015 - Day 2

Day 2

Game 5
Tenna City Titans, Human
burgun824
Score/Result: 3-2, Win

Day 2 started much like day 1 with the Leap getting a blitz on the kickoff table.  This led to the frogs taking a 2-0 lead into the second half and they received. After a fast touchdown a 3-0 lead for the frogs was achieved.  The Titans (co-Most Brutal) proceeded to continue smashing frogs into the ground to score their first TD.  They kicked to the frogs who tried a long pass to stall out the game and they fumbled it.  The Titans scooped it up and easily scored to make it 3-2.  Two turns remained for the Titans to tie it up.  Luckily for the short handed Leap, the kick scattered out-of-bounds and the Leap gave the ball to Bufo, their Croaxigor who held onto the ball for dear life.   A turn 16 double skull for the Titans ended their comeback hopes.

Game 6

Hulks of Hazzard, Chaos Dwarfs
Grither
Score/Result: 1-2, Loss

The Leap learned their lesson and chose to receive the opening kick this time so as not to be players down before they even had a turn.  The frogs were able to score a very fast touchdown before getting pulverized by the good 'ole boys.  Who scored on turn eight of the first half?  Daisy, but her shorts left me begging for more length.
The second half saw the Hulks grind away on the frogs.  Numbers were on the CD side but the Leap had one last chance to knock the ball out of a rambling chaos dwarf.  Bufo miraculously dodged out failing first then passing loner and completing the dodge, he went for it twice with the sewcond one being for a block and... push.  The Hulks then knocked over Bufo and strolled in to the endzone for the win.

Day 2: 1-1
Overall: 3-2-1

*These games took place three days ago and just like high school and college I am unable (read: unwilling) to take notes.  So this is what happened to the best of my knowledge.*

Again Chaos Cup 2015 was a blast and I hope everyone makes it out next year!

Chaos Cup Rundown 2015 - Day 1

Every time I was asked how my weekend was; I tried to let on how much fun I had.  I never was able to verbalize it and it won't come out correctly here.  I've had fun every single tournament that I've had the opportunity to play in or run, but for some reason this one was the most fun.  I have never played against a coach I didn't enjoy and this tournament was no exception.  Five of the six coaches I played for the first time and the sixth I had only played twice before this.

Game 1
Gobu Dhabi Grifters, Goblin
Three of Swords
Score/Result: 1-0 Win

The first game on Saturday saw my slann versus the richest goblin team in the world.  The team consisted of 10 standard gobbos, a pogoer, fanatic, looney, and a bombardier.  Their wealth allowed them to pay for the services of Fungus the Loon and Nobbla Blackwart as well as providing the ref three reasons to look the other way.
The game began with the slann's best friend, a blitz action on the kickoff.  The Leap were able to secure their own kick and score a quick touchdown.  This caused the Grifters to use all three of their bribes right away.  The rest of the half was spent with the goblins beating the spring out of the frogs but neither team could manage a score.
The second half kick would go to the frogs but the goblins would field the most outstanding player of the match.  His position and usefulness on the pitch are often looked down upon but Boomy would live up to his moniker.  The crafty bombardier would put his Hail Mary Pass ability to great use.  He never fumbled a bomb and all but 1 one of his attempts made contact.  Every time the  Leap were able to pick-up the ball, either Boomy would knock it free or knock down some surrounding frogs.
The touchdown that resulted from opening blitz made way for the loan touchdown of the match.

Game 2
Badazz'dum Ballbrea'krzz, Chaos Dwarfs
Darkstar70
Score/Result: 2-2 Tie
Chaos Dwarfs are a mighty race, add in two players with mighty blow and it looked like a long day for the Leap.  We knew going in that we needed to be very aggressive.  Thanks to that style, the frogs were able to jump out to a quick two score lead.  But in the second half the pain was amplified.
The Ballbrea'krzz scored a touchdown on their possession to start the second half.  In the process of doing so they had casualtied or knocked out enough frogs that only six frogs could set up to receive.  The Leap tried to stop the CD's from getting the ball back, but through some solid hitting two more frogs had left the game and two more were perpetually stunned allow them to knock the ball free and score on bull centaur pick-up and walk-in to tie the game

Game 3
Pillow Talk, Halflings
stoutyoungblood
Score/Result:  2-1 Win
Thank you refs for paying attention in this one!  The trees were there to do some beating and the flings were there to do some stompin'.  Luckily for the Leap the ref caught three of those fouling nappers in the act.  Not until the halflings had tossed out to a 1-0 lead.  The first score of the game saw Oakbranch chuck a willing Hamish Headstrong down the pitch were he landed with the grace of an Olympic gymnast.  Five swift strides led the little guy to pay-dirt.
For the second half kick off the fans of Pillow Talk were furious with the referee.  They may have been out numbered in the crowd but they took out their rage on the frogs stunning three of them while making sure Pillow Talk remained untouched.  The Leap were able to keep a relative number equality after that and scored two very slippery touchdowns to win the game.

Game 4
Arkham's Horrors, Chaos
Duncanfsiidaho
Score/Result:  1-2 Loss
"What happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?  The same thing that happens to everything else."  Oh wait that's Marvel not DC... and it's possibly the worst line ever uttered in a movie. Anyway the Horror's decided to treat the Leap like that toad.  They began the game by blocking the three frogs on the line.  They scored two casualties and a knock-out.  The frogs could do nothing to stop the Horrors who took their sweet time with scoring so as to savor the amphibian carnage that was taking place.
The Leap accepted the second half kick and scored as fast as they could.  Then the chaos resumed making their frog dinner, easily scoring the winning touchdown late in the game.

Day 1: 2-1-1

*These games took place three days ago and just like high school and college I am unable (read: unwilling) to take notes.  So this is what happened to the best of my knowledge.*

Chaos Cup 2015 - Are You Ready?

Chaos Cup 2015 is just days away?  According to Tournament Organizer, Rowdykatie, there are 69 players pre-registered for Chaos Cup 2015.  If no one showed up at the door (highly unlikely) this would be the 4th largest CC in history.  There isn't any history of this event that the website doesn't cover (Huge props to Jonny P).

I can't write anything here that could excite the BB masses anymore.  But I'm pretty jazzed about the pre-reg swag.  Here is all the cool stuff they get.  Also there is an extensive list of awards players could win.

AWARDS (Tournament Organizer will break any ties)
–Champion ‐ Winner of Top Table in Round 6
–2nd Place ‐ Loser of the Top Table round 6
–3rd Place – Highest ranked coach that wasn’t at the Top Table
–Best Defense ‐ Team that allowed the fewest TDs (that did not win 1st‐3rd)
–Best Offense ‐ Team that scored the most TDs (that did not win 1st‐3rd)
–Most Brutal ‐ Team that inflicted the most Casualties from Blocking (that did not win 1st‐3rd)
–I Am Chaos Award – Highest ranked coach using CHAOS, CHAOS PACT, NURGLE, UNDERWORLD, CHAOS DWARFS
–Best Comeback – Highest increase in standings after Round 2
–Farthest Traveled Overall – Given to coach who traveled the furthest
–Farthest Traveled US Coach – Given to coach who traveled the furthest within the US
–Stunty Cup – Winner of the round 6 Stunty Cup match
–Halfling, Goblin, Ogre, Lizardmen with no Saurus, Underworld with no Skaven
–No star players are allowed for the above mentioned Lizardmen and Underworld teams
–Best Sportsman ‐ Best Sportsman as voted on by your peers
–Wooden Spoon ‐ Coach that finished ranked lowest

Rumors floating around the inter-webs are that there will be a greater than normal number of stunty entrants.  This years theme race is the Chaos Dwarfs and they should be well represented too.  I posed the question on Twitter of who the winning race will be... and I got a very, very limited response.  So who do you think will take it?

Here are my guesses.

-  1st:  Dark Elves
-  2nd:  Amazons
-  3rd:  Chaos Dwarfs
-  Best D:  Undead
-  Best O:  Skaven
-  Brutal:  Dwarfs
-  I Am Chaos:  Pact
-  Best Comeback:  Lizardmen
-  Stunty Cup:  Halflings
-  Wooden Spoon:  Ogres

10 chances, I will probably get 0 right - if you beat me I'll put your name in a drawing to win... something... I'll post when I figure it out.  It'll be Blood Bowl related.
